Sonny M. A. Erekosima has a Diploma in Law in London in 1983 and also bagged his Law degree at the University of London in June 1987. He attended the mandatory Law School in Nigeria and was called to the Bar in the year 1990. He started his Law practice with a City firm – S.A. Nwakohu & Associates. After several years of practice, he was appointed legal advisor to the defunct Shipping Federation where he was drafted into a Federal Government Committee that merged Shipping Federation with the defunct Joint Maritime Industrial Council which subsequently merged with the defunct Nigeria Maritime Authority (NMA) that brought about the present day Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

Sonny M. A. Erekosima spent 14 years in NIMASA and served in various capacities and departments to mention a few … twice as Deputy Registrar of Ships; Pioneer head of the Cabotage ‘enforcement team’ that reports to the Director when the Cabotage Law was enacted, headed Maritime Labour issues in the Eastern zone which comprises Cross Rivers State, Akwa Ibom State, Rivers State and Bayelsa State, NIMASA Representative on issues concerning NIGERIA LOCAL CONTENT, Overall Head Cabotage Department where he successfully retired in August 2018.

He attended the International Maritime Law Institute ( IMLI) Malta where he bagged my LL.M.(Int’l Maritime Law) in 2011.
Upon his retirement from NIMASA, he began a private Law chamber, S.M.A Erekosima & Associates in Maritime consultancy.
